Feast of the Nativity of Mary
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of September
On the first Sunday of September Boffalora d'Adda, a municipality of 1,705 inhabitants in the province of Lodi, celebrates the Nativity of Mary.
On the name of Boffalora nobody has ever agreed, and there are three accredited explanations: the German Wulfhari; «Boffa l'Ora», that is «the wind blows»; or the late Latin Bufalus Ora, the buffalo ground. In 1978, digging right in the middle of the built-up area, a grave assemblage came to light with a gold cross and the ornaments of a shield. There was also a monastery here, of enclosed nuns of the Servants of the Virgin Mary of the Spasimo, and there was a castle, of which traces remain in the courtyard of a farm.
The parish church was built in 1513, under the pontificate of Leo X, and rebuilt from scratch barely eighty years later, in 1590; the marble high altar is not its own, it comes from the old church of San Michele in Lodi, which is thirteenth-century. The river, meanwhile, has taken back what was taken from it: the riverside colony built in 1941 was eaten away little by little by the Adda, which changed course and carried it off. The village was called simply Boffalora; the «d'Adda» dates from 1863, to tell it apart from its namesakes.
