Tavazzano con Villavesco

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 6,099 · Postal code: 26838

Villavesco is first recorded in 994 as villa episcopi, the village belonging to the bishop, and the name never changed. Tavazzano appears in 1125, when Giovanni Trissino of Lodi founded a hospital dedicated to Saint John the Baptist where the road from Milan to Lodi crosses the Sillaro. Nearby, in 1193, a battle is recorded, called the Ford or the Ditch of Lodi, between the Milanese and a league of Lodi, Cremona, Pavia, Bergamo and Como.

The final merger came in 1869, but the new comune took the name Villavesco, the hamlet that had grown most because it lay close to the Piacenza road and the railway. Later the roles reversed: in 1963 the town hall moved to Tavazzano and the comune took its present name. Recent building has welded the two settlements into one. The chimneys of the power station still mark the skyline: of the twin towers, 252 metres high, only one is left, and it remains the tallest chimney in Italy.
