San Zenone al Lambro

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,186 · Postal code: 20070

The village's name is written in two places that do not serve it. The railway halt called San Zenone al Lambro is actually at Villa Bissone and mainly serves the neighbouring commune of Sordio; the Autostrada del Sole runs beside the built-up area without having any junction here, yet the service station that stands on it carries the village's name all the same. Anyone stopping to eat at the San Zenone services cannot reach San Zenone by any means. The historic Milan-Bologna line, opened in 1861, and the high-speed line, brought into service in 2008, both cross the territory.

Four thousand one hundred and eighty-six inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Milan, in countryside that has historically always belonged to the Lodi area. Which is precisely what makes the choice of 1992 striking: when the province of Lodi was created, San Zenone al Lambro decided not to join it and to stay with Milan. The full name dates from 1863, added to distinguish it from the other San Zenone of Italy; the hamlet of Santa Maria in Prato, attached once in the Napoleonic period and then independent again, was joined for good in 1870.
