Two readings of the name survive: a Germanic personal name, perhaps Godizzo or Wito, or the Latin guttus, whose diminutive means «small marsh». Being in between put it in the records: disputed by the two cities, it gave its name to the peace treaty signed here in August 1216. From the Romans comes a rare terracotta calendar found in its territory, the Fasti Guidizzolenses, now in Brescia.
The arms show a hand in a black sleeve holding a chalice, and a hedgehog on two crossed laurel branches. Between February and April 1945, whenever the official post failed, a private delivery service with its own stamps ran from here to nearby villages and Mantua. On 12 May 1957, on the road between Cerlongo and Guidizzolo, Alfonso de Portago's Ferrari left the road: the driver, his navigator Edmund Nelson and nine spectators died, five of them children. A monument marks the spot: that crash ended the Mille Miglia as a race.
