Calvignasco

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,182 · Postal code: 20080

Calvignasco is the smallest municipality by area in the metropolitan city of Milan, and it is also, together with Alzano Scrivia in the province of Alessandria, the flattest in Italy: between the highest and the lowest point of its territory there is one metre of difference. The two blue bands on its arms are said to be the two canals between which the village lies, the Bereguardo and the Pavese.

The church of San Michele has been dedicated to the archangel since at least the fourteenth century, but what you see now comes from a rebuilding begun in 1605: cardinal Federico Borromeo had come on a visitation and had found it too small. The municipality is divided in parish terms too: San Michele depends on Casorate Primo, which is in the province of Pavia, while the hamlet of Bettola, where the town hall is, answers to Rosate.
