Cesate

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 13,858 · Postal code: 20020

Cesate first appears in a manuscript of 1210, Goffredo da Bussero's Liber Notitiae Sanctorum Mediolani, spelled Cixate; it was not yet a municipality and answered to Bollate in everything, civil and religious alike. The origin of the name is still unsettled, but the old form survives in the coat of arms, which bears two winged eagle's claws from the arms of the de Cixate family; the tree and meadow beside them stand for the woods and heaths still covering much of the territory, and the pine wood east of the town is a site of community importance.

The town changed shape in the nineteen-fifties, when the INA-Casa village rose between the old centre and the railway, designed by Franco Albini, Ignazio Gardella, Gianni Albricci, Enrico Castiglioni and the BBPR group. The mayor and the landowners fought it and refused to sell; the land was taken by compulsory purchase under a prefect's decree. The village church of Saint Francis is by Gardella with Anna Maria Castelli, and the municipality holds the silver medal for civil merit as an active centre of the Resistance.
