Until 1864, this municipality was known simply as Garbagnate. Over a century later, on February 25, 1985, a presidential decree officially upgraded it to the honorary status of a city. Located about 15 kilometers northwest of Milan, it currently houses just over 26,000 residents within the dense metropolitan hinterland.
While heavily integrated with neighboring towns like Arese and Bollate, the urban environment is balanced by its natural borders. The city operates as one of 28 municipalities within the Parco delle Groane, serving as a practical starting point for walks in this protected regional green space.
