Cuggiono

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,142 · Postal code: 20012

Cuggiono comes from the Celtic cuslono: cus for wood or thicket, the suffix ono for place, so the spot beside the wood. The spelling took centuries to settle, through Cusonum, Cucionum and Cuzono. The village is bound to the Crivelli, its lords for a long stretch: Uberto, son of the feudal lord Guala, took the papal throne in 1185 as Urban III and led the Church two years, amid the struggle between papacy and empire.

In the seventeenth century Cuggiono, by then lordless, bought its release from feudal tenure; soon after, the part called Cuggiono Minore gave that independence up and handed itself to the Piantanida as a fief, to clear the debts run up paying for the release. The families that had fought over the place all ended in the arms, one figure taken from each: the Piantanida ash, though their own blazon carried poplars, the two Clerici columns and, at the base, the Crivelli sieve.
