Saint Charles and Saint Joseph, patrons of Marcallo con Casone
📅 Every year, on 4 November
Marcallo con Casone celebrates Saint Charles and Saint Joseph on 4 November; the other patrons, Saints Nazarius and Celsus, are celebrated on 28 July.
Marcallo con Casone was formed in 1870 from two neighbouring communes on the irrigated plain west of Milan, fed by the Villoresi canal; a few years earlier Casone was still called Menedrago. Scholars disagree about the name Marcallo: some trace it to the Germanic Markt Halle, a market of Lombard times, others to Mark, a limit or boundary. The arms are plainer: the silver sieve stands for the Crivelli, long the lords here, the vine branch with three bunches recalls the crop that ruled these fields until the nineteenth century, when grain replaced it, and the blue wavy band is irrigation water.
In December 1651 the community paid 1,890 Milanese lire to the Real Camera to free itself from vassalage; then debt won out, between quartered Spanish troops and a parish church to rebuild, and in 1756 the village gave up the liberty it had just bought, becoming the fief of Ludovico Vitali. On 4 June 1859 the battle of Magenta reached the vineyards and farmsteads of Marcallo: the curate Filippo Sessa turned the parish house into a hospital and tended the dying in French and in German alike, while the dead gathered from the fields were buried behind the cemetery under a mound later made a monument.
