Saint Bernard and the 1630 plague vow
📅 Every year, on 20 August; a perpetual vow from 1630 for surviving the plague
Mesero celebrates Saint Bernard on 20 August, in the shrine dedicated to him together with Our Lady of Sorrows.
In 1393 the Milanese nobleman Antonio Corrado left all his property at Mesero to the fathers of the abbey of Sant'Ambrogio ad Nemus, but on one condition: that every year, for ever, there should be distributed to the poor of the community two moggia of wheat bread in loaves of five ounces each, two staia of chickpeas cooked and well seasoned, and ten brente of wine. It is the first document in which the village's name appears, and it already tells us everything about how things worked: charity was a contract, with the quantities written down and even an obligation to season the chickpeas properly.
Three thousand nine hundred and nine inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Milan, which in March 2016 obtained by decree the title of city. In a chapel of the municipal cemetery lies the body of Saint Gianna Beretta, and that is why pilgrims come to Mesero from Europe and from the Americas; here too is the first sanctuary dedicated to the family. In 1517, by a bull of Leo X, the community gave up its right to choose its own parish priest and became a monastic parish under the prior of the Carthusians of Garegnano.
