Nosate is the least populous municipality of the metropolitan city of Milan and the second furthest from the city itself: some thirty kilometres away as the crow flies, closer only than the exclave of San Colombano al Lambro. Its coat of arms, granted in 1937, puts two things together: the turreted keep comes from the arms of the Cattaneo family, who from 1770 were the last holders of the fief, while the walnut tree is canting arms, that is a pun on the village's name.
The registers tell of a very small place that stood still for a long time: a hundred and ninety-eight inhabitants in 1751, two hundred and ninety-one twenty years later, then a slow decline to two hundred and sixty-eight in 1809. In 1811 the municipality was suppressed and annexed to Turbigo, and when it comes back into the counts the figures have more than doubled, four hundred and forty-six in 1853. In the countryside stands Santa Maria in Binda, a church whose origin is traced as far back as the eighth century, and in the village the church of San Guniforte, dedicated to a saint one does not often meet.
