San Donato Milanese

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 30,992 · Postal code: 20097

San Donato is the city Enrico Mattei built around an idea: Metanopoli, the "capital of methane" born in the 1950s with Eni's towers, modern churches and garden quarters for employees — an experiment in corporate urbanism unique in Italy, still legible on a walk among the headquarters buildings. Here boom-era Italy designed itself.

The old village around the parish church recalls the farming town that was; the abbeys of Viboldone and Chiaravalle are minutes away. By the yellow metro line, the Duomo is fifteen minutes: San Donato is South Milan's tidiest front door.
