Sedriano

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 11,270 · Postal code: 20018

Two families of theories compete over the name. The Latin one traces it to a Roman gens settled here, to the noun sator, "sower", for the fertility of the soil, or to the family name Saterius; the village later gave the sower a square and a monument by Carlo Chiodini. The Lombard one derives it from desiderianum, "of king Desiderius", or from sedes Arianorum, after Arian Lombards said to have lived here. The chronicles first name the place in 900, when one Podo da Sateriano testified in a feudal dispute.

From the twelfth century Sedriano appears in documents through the men born there: Rogerio, a Milanese judge, Gabriele, a court chaser and armourer, and Giovanni da Sedriano, a printer, who in 1472 set up the first printing house in Pavia. Like most of the Corbetta parish district it was never granted away as a fief, and at unification it moved from the province of Pavia to that of Milan. Its arms join the sun of the Raja with the lion of the Prandoni.
