Vittuone

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,949 · Postal code: 20010

The name Vittuone seems to come from the Latin Vicus Todone, «Todone's village», after a local figure of the Lombard age named in a document of 793; a diploma of Henry III, king of Germany, dated 1045, already has Vicotodone. The village sat on the Vercelli consular road, which since Roman times ran from Milan to Vercelli through Novara, and that explains an oddity: the parish church stood not among the houses but outside, by the farmstead known as Garàscia, now demolished. In 1848 it was rebuilt in the centre by the Milanese architect Giacomo Moraglia.

The town arms assemble those of the families that had left their mark: the Resta wheel, the Annoni castle with its dove, the gold and red bands of the Venini, and the horse, canting arms of the Destrieri. That last choice is disputed: the Destrieri left the community little more than minor bequests, while the Salazar, Spanish in origin and important here for centuries, do not appear. In the Second World War the village took in evacuees from Milan, among them Giulio Natta, a future Nobel laureate, who brought part of his laboratory with him.
