Santo Stefano Ticino

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,801 · Postal code: 20010

In 1650 Santo Stefano, which was a privately owned fief, bought its own independence for twelve hundred Milanese lire. The freedom lasted little more than twenty years: in 1672, crushed by debt, the village had to give it up and became once more a fief of the Borri, the family from which came Squarcino Borri, born here in 1230, who had obtained these lands for services rendered to the Visconti.

The Ticino is in the name, but the river is not: it flows in the neighbouring comune, at Magenta, and the territory of Santo Stefano does not touch it. The addition dates from 1862. The first nucleus of the village is said to have grown up towards the end of the twelfth century around a chapel standing alone in the fields; older still are the Roman finds, among them a cinerary urn that held a mirror, and the objects the writer Carlo Dossi dug up here in 1902.
