Arluno

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 11,495 · Postal code: 20010

The idea that Arluno comes from Ara Lunae, the altar of the Moon, goes back to Filippo Argelati, who in 1745, in his Bibliotheca scriptorum mediolanensium, latinised the surname of the historian Bernardino Arluno, of the Sforza court, that way: the form appears then for the first time, and the nobles of the day liked it. The town's arms, gules with a pair of silver wings under a silver crescent, in fact repeat those of Bernardino's own family, and they are canting: wings and moon, since in the local dialect ar means wings. In the seventeenth century the community carried another shield, halved between the Sormani and the Pozzobonelli marquises, who held the fief.

In the Pozzobonelli palace, later Porro Lambertenghi, Silvio Pellico was long tutor to count Luigi's sons; Giuseppe Parini took his leisure at villa Marliani. Cesare Castiglioni, who founded the Italian Red Cross, was born here in 1806. The First World War memorial in piazza Pozzobonelli is known in the village as Ceck: at its unveiling the mother of Francesco Mario Losa, killed on Monte Grappa, saw her son's face in the statue and shouted his name in dialect.
