Caponago

Province: Monza and Brianza · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,226 · Postal code: 20867

On 13 March 1784, in the fields on the border with Carugate, the first Italian hot-air balloon came down, piloted by count Paolo Andreani; the feat so struck cardinal Angelo Maria Durini that he devoted a pamphlet to it. The village, by then, was already centuries old: in 876 Charles the Bald, newly crowned king of Italy at Pavia, had made over its ownership to archbishop Ansperto, and it was the latter's will that put Caponago into writing among the first documents to name it.

By 1266 Caponago is already a comune with a consul of its own, and in the eighteenth century that consul was elected by all the heads of household in the community. Two families live together on the coat of arms: the lion comes from the Caponago, with the colours reversed, and the plaits from the Casati, who at the end of the eighteenth century were the largest landowners in the place. There is also a nickname the inhabitants have carried for almost a century, masa curat, priest-killers: it goes back to 1932, when the parish priest Natale Villa was murdered in the village together with his sister.
