Mary Assumed into Heaven, patron of the land of the Lambro Valley Park
📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of July
Lesmo celebrates Mary Assumed into Heaven on the second Sunday of July, in the church dedicated to her.
Lesmo lies in Brianza, on the bank of the Lambro at the mouth of the Pegorino valley, with the hamlets of Gerno, Peregallo and California. Several explanations compete for the name. The best argued starts from the medieval forms Ledeximum and Ledesmum and goes back to the Latin personal name Laetissimus; others preferred Latin laetus, cheerful, for fertile farmland, and some believed in Greek settlers from Lesbos who stayed on here in Caesar's wake.
The town's arms take the blazon of the Lombard family de Lesmo, which had taken its own name from the place: a lion barry of silver and black with a red tongue, on a blue field instead of red and with the bars in reverse order. Gaetano Casati was born here in 1838, an army officer turned geographer who spent years exploring the equatorial regions between Sudan and central Africa. The name also travels at speed: the Monza circuit gave it to two of its corners.
