Of Roman Arcore a marble slab remains, dedicated to a Julia Drusilla, from the first century: it is the only ancient find made in the town, and it is kept in Milan's archaeological museum. The name may come from Hercules, or from an arch: nobody knows for certain.
There was a castle: the donation of Ariprando and Gisla, of 1100, names it, and on the maps of 1722 today's street was still called the castle road — but not one stone is left. From the sixteenth century the Milanese families came to build their pleasure villas: the Borromeo d'Adda, the Cazzola, the San Martino. In the mid-eighteenth century Arcore had 580 inhabitants; today it has 17,285.
