Rovellasca

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 7,565 · Postal code: 22069

The name joins the root of nearby Rovello to the Celtic suffix -asco, «on the edge of». Rovello itself is still argued over: the reading that best fits the suffix points to roa, stony ground, others to the Latin rovum, blackthorn, or to rod, «embankment», with the Lura in mind. The town's arms show a green rock on blue topped by a silver eagle; the old communal emblem is recorded in Marco Cremosano's seventeenth-century armorial.

Silk was worked here from the early eighteenth century: by the middle of the nineteenth century the village winding mill employed more than a hundred girls aged twelve to eighteen, run by the Protestant pastor Theophilus Linder. Giovanni Battista Grassi was born here in 1854, the doctor who identified the anopheles mosquito as the carrier of malaria. In 1928 Rovellasca was merged with Rovello Porro into one comune named Rovi Porro; the merger was undone in 1939.

The Holy Crucifix, a patron born from the 1508 plague

📅 Every year, on Shrove Tuesday, in memory of the 1508 plague

Rovellasca celebrates the Holy Crucifix every Shrove Tuesday. It is said that in 1508 a terrible epidemic struck the small village: the praying community carried the cross from the high altar in procession, and the plague ceased. Ever since, the faithful celebrate for three days, carrying the crucifix through the town's streets.
