Candia Lomellina

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,636 · Postal code: 27031

Every Shrove Tuesday at Candia a trial and a burning are re-enacted. The figure is Pierina, who in 1617 spied for the Piedmontese against the Spanish and paid for it: ever since, the village re-enacts her sacrifice through the streets of the centre. The other festivals are less grim — on the first Sunday of October the five contrade compete in the Palio del Marenghìn, in August they go down the Sesia in the barcè, the traditional rowing boats, and in July there is the festival of the bleak, one of the fish of this part of the Lomellina.

The fief, meanwhile, had changed hands only a few times but well. In 1603 Gianangelo Arcimboldi became count of Candia; when the Arcimboldi died out in 1675, the fief was bought the following year by Pietro Gallarati Scotti, who was already lord of the nearby Cozzo and Sant'Angelo Lomellina. In 1707, with the whole Lomellina, Candia passed to the House of Savoy, and in 1928 it took in the abolished comune of Terrasa, where the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie stands. In the former confraternity church, meanwhile, there are the frescoes of Giuseppe Amisani.
