Feast of Saint Joseph
📅 Every year, on 19 March
On 19 March Filighera celebrates its patron Saint Joseph, after whom the parish church is named; the town has the gate of the walled village and the Santuario Madonna della Colombina.
Filighera has 849 inhabitants in the plain to the right of the Olona, east of Pavia. It was the seat of an ancient pieve of the diocese of Pavia and in the twelfth century it appears as Felegaria. In the fifteenth century it became part of the vicariate of Belgioioso, which in 1475 was granted in fief to a cadet branch of the Este and later passed by marriage to the princes Barbiano di Belgioioso. The comune has grown by absorbing others: first Beatico, which in the twelfth century was called Abiaticum, and later the suppressed comune of Montesano.
Of this small village, though, one thing survives that is worth more than a chronicle: the list of those who have administered it, kept from 1872 to the present. The titles change by themselves and tell the century better than any summary: mayors until the early twenties, then a prefectural commissioner, then a mayor who after a few years becomes podestà, then commissioners again in the war years, and at the end of the war a podestà in the first months and a mayor by the summer. And then there is one name that stays still for a very long time: Carolina Grugni, mayor of Filighera for twenty-nine consecutive years, from 1964 to 1993.
