Feast of San Germano d'Auxerre
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of August
On the first Sunday of August Alagna, a municipality of 882 inhabitants in the province of Pavia, celebrates its patron San Germano d'Auxerre.
Alagna has 882 inhabitants in the central Lomellina, on the right bank of the Terdoppio. There is a fine hypothesis about the name: Pliny the Elder names a region Aliana between the Po and the Ticino, famous for its flax, and that region ought to be precisely today's Lomellina. The village as such appears as Allagna in 1250, in the list of the lands subject to Pavia; then it followed the fortunes of the Lomellina, which in 1713 passed to the House of Savoy and only in 1859 ended up in the province of Pavia.
In the middle of the village stands the castle the Malaspina built in 1534. It has a U-shaped plan and a scarped base, sloping outwards, which served for defence; on the north side the tower remains, and to the south a hanging courtyard opens out over the houses. Today it is a private residence. The rest is told by the figures: in 1859 there were 1,252 people living in Alagna, more than live there now. Like many villages of the Lomellina, it has fewer people than in the days when the countryside gave work to everyone.
