Linarolo

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,754 · Postal code: 27010

Two hamlets of Linarolo are called San Leonardo and Ospedaletto, and the names say what passed through here: the via Francigena. The municipality belonged to the Order of the Templars, and of the pilgrims' passage there remains the memory of a hospital for those bound for Rome, recalled in 1400 by the duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti in an itinerary written for those going there. The parish church of Sant'Antonio Abate too, first named on the third of September 1380, belonged to the Canons Regular of Sant'Antonio di Vienne, who kept a pilgrims' hospice beside it.

This is the place where the Ticino ends in the Po: the confluence happens near the hamlet of Vaccarizza, where the Becca bridge crosses, and around it stretch the woods that are part of the Ticino park. The village's name, on the other hand, comes from the fields: flax was grown here, and the flax plant is in the municipal arms together with a wavy band for the two rivers. In 1872 the municipality of Vaccarizza was suppressed and joined to Linarolo. Two thousand seven hundred and fifty-four inhabitants in the province of Pavia.
