Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Zeccone, a municipality of 1,696 inhabitants in the province of Pavia, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
The hamlet of Villareggio was called Villa Regia, and it really was a royal villa: an estate of Theodoric's time and then Lombard, which until very recently kept the marble tombstone of Boethius. It was rich land, too: in 1181 it paid the comune of Pavia 315 soldi in the fodro and giogatico taxes, the highest assessment after that of Porto Morone. In 1871 the comune of Villareggio was abolished and joined to Zeccone.
Zeccone, for its part, appears as Zacono in a diploma of bishop Bernardo I of 18 May 1129, in favour of the canons of San Giovanni Domnarum of Pavia, who owned land here. But the most surprising thing turned up by chance: in January 1869 a small hoard of jewellery and fifth-century coins was discovered, studied by Brambilla and today in the Museo Civico of the Visconti castle in Pavia. Zeccone, too, has lost and regained its own comune: abolished and annexed to Bornasco between 1928 and 1946, it became autonomous again in 1947.
