  • Civico Teatro Cagnoni

The Teatro Cagnoni is the theatre of Vigevano, named after the Vigevano composer Antonio Cagnoni.

    What to see

Begun in 1871 and inaugurated in 1873, it became necessary after performances had for years been held in adapted premises. The exterior has the typical features of nineteenth-century eclectic architecture, with string-course mouldings and simple window frames. Inside, the broad foyer gives access to the stalls, while two flights of stairs lead to the three tiers of boxes, the gallery and the Ridotto.

The broad proscenium arch separates the auditorium from the stage; a gridiron allows scene changes. Two drop curtains were created by the Vigevano painter Giovanni Battista Garberini: the first shows a festive outing of the people of Vigevano on the bank of the Ticino, the second is devoted to the siege of Vigevano with the heroic Camilla Rodolfi. In 1896 the theatre took the name of the composer Antonio Cagnoni, to whom the city dedicated it; a bust in the atrium commemorates him. Another sculpture is dedicated to Eleonora Duse, born in Vigevano itself.
