The name comes from the gravel: in dialect it is gera, and the village was buried in it during a destructive flood of the Bitto, the torrent that runs through it. Gerola Alta is the southernmost municipality of the province of Sondrio, at the head of the valley that bears its name. The hamlets are many and each has its church: Valle, Nasoncio, Fenile, Castello, Ravizze, Case di Sopra, Laveggiolo, while in the centre stands the parish church of San Bartolomeo.
That torrent gave its name to the cheese as well. Bitto is made here, and on the third Sunday of September the fair fills the village: the herdsmen and the furmagiàt lay their wheels out on the stalls, and with that cheese polenta taragna is made. The other thing worked at Gerola is the pezzotto, the Valtellina rug of coloured strips and geometric patterns. Above the village, at Pescegallo, there are the ski lifts, and from the Salmurano pass you cross over into the Val Brembana.
