Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June Grantola, a municipality of 1,271 inhabitants in the province of Varese, celebrates its patrons Saints Peter and Paul.
On the bank of the Grantorella stream stand Le Mura, the walls, long taken in the village for the remains of a colossal castle pulled down by the landsknechts. They are not: it is a neo-Gothic backdrop put up in the early twentieth century for the garden of Palazzo De Nicola, to which it was joined by a bridge that later collapsed. A fake ruin, aged enough to look real.
The palace has two towers, masonic symbols on the wall and, painted in orange, Stephenson's locomotive: it was put there by Gaspare De Nicola, who in 1870 was building railways in Italy and Portugal. Beside the public washhouse is a fresco of the Madonna of the Snows dated 17 November 1618. Grantola was annexed to Mesenzana in 1809 and to Montegrino Valtravaglia in 1927, and became a municipality again after the war.
