Duno is the second least populated comune in the province of Varese, and its administrative history is that of a village always judged too small to stand alone: annexed to its neighbours at every nineteenth-century reform, made independent again, joined to Cuvio in 1928 and able to recover its town hall only in 1954. Its inhabitants were 265 in 1853, a little over a hundred and fifty a century later, and about as many again today.
In a village of that size, however, stands a sanctuary that concerns the whole country: the votive temple of the Doctors of Italy, dedicated to the Madonna of the Rosary, which the diocese of Como counts among its sanctuaries. It is here, in a handful of houses above the Valcuvia, that Italian physicians have their temple, beside the old church of San Martino and the parish church of Saints Julian and Basilissa.
