Feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian
📅 Every year, on 26 September
On 26 September Cadrezzate con Osmate celebrates Saints Cosmas and Damian, patrons alongside Saint Margaret (20 July); the municipal territory borders Lake Monate.
Cadrezzate con Osmate was born of a referendum held on 28 October 2018 and of a regional law of 2019, which merged Cadrezzate — which kept the town hall — and Osmate. It still has no coat of arms of its own: the statute provided for one to be adopted within six months, and in the meantime the municipality uses the two former arms side by side. Changing names, in these parts, is an old habit anyway: Osmate belonged to a municipality called Lentate Verbano, in 1893 it obtained the town hall and the name Osmate-Lentate, in 1929 Lentate broke away to join Sesto Calende, and only from 1970 was the municipality simply called Osmate.
The oldest name is Osmate's own, which by tradition comes from Oscio Mater, a pagan deity worshipped here: on the ruins of the temple the first Christian place of worship was built, where the chaplain of Cadrezzate came to say mass. But the land was inhabited far earlier: at the place called il Sabbione, on the shore of Lake Monate, lie the remains of a pile-dwelling settlement, one of the 111 prehistoric sites around the Alps inscribed since 2011 on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and in August 1971 a dugout canoe was recovered there, now in the Villa Mirabello museum in Varese. In 1796, when the arrival of the Napoleonic armies suppressed the monastery of the Augustinian nuns of the Sacro Monte above Varese, the nuns found refuge in the parish of Osmate.
