Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,444 · Postal code: 21061

This municipality is the result of a long subtraction. Until 1927 the territory now called Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca was divided into ten separate municipalities, in being since the Middle Ages; fascism reduced them to three — Maccagno, Pino sulla Sponda del Lago Maggiore and Veddasca — and on 4 February 2014 the three became one, after the consultative referendum held in the three villages on the first of December 2013. The seat is at Maccagno. Ten, three, one: in less than a century the map of this stretch of the Lake Maggiore shore has been simplified by nine tenths.

At first the new municipality informally used the arms of Maccagno, that is of the seat; then, in 2018, it had arms of its own granted, holding the three pieces together: the blue field and red tower of Maccagno, the two counter-rampant lions of Pino and the stars of Veddasca. The territory reaches the Swiss border — it adjoins Brissago, Gambarogno and Ronco sopra Ascona — and the municipality belongs to the Regio Insubrica, the cross-border cooperation body that brings together Lombard and Piedmontese provinces and the Swiss canton of Ticino.
