In 1863 this village changed its name twice: in February it became Bassano di Tronzano, in November Tronzano Lago Maggiore, which is the name it has now. Tronzano comes from a Terentius, a Roman landowner, and the addition says where it stands: on the Lombard shore of the lake, right against the Swiss border.
The municipality is small and always has been: three hundred and twenty-three people in 1751, five hundred at the beginning of the nineteenth century. In 1809 nearby Pino was joined to it and it reached seven hundred and forty-four, but not for long: by the middle of the century it was under four hundred again. There remain the churches of Santa Maria Assunta, San Rocco and San Sebastiano, and the oratory of the Disciplinati.
