Cannobio

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,992 · Postal code: 28822

Cannobio lies on the north-western shore of Lake Maggiore, at the mouth of the Valle Cannobina, on the Swiss border. The Roman layout can still be read, with some effort, in the cardo and decumanus between via Giovanola and Campo Rezio, where the garrison commander's house stood; a document of 929 describes the place as a fortified centre with a castle.

Timber and cowhides for tanning left the port for Milan. After the death of Gian Galeazzo Visconti the Mazzarditi brothers took power, made the bell tower the prison of their opponents and built themselves a stronghold on the islands facing Cannero; they were defeated in 1414 by Filippo Maria Visconti.
