Feast of Saint Mark
📅 Every year, on 25 April
On 25 April Camporotondo di Fiastrone, a municipality of 589 inhabitants in the province of Macerata, celebrates its patron Saint Mark.
Before it was called this the village had two other names, Ventiliano and Carufo, and both were lost along the way; the present one it took from the river running beside it, the Fiastrone. The first certain record is from 1147, when the land around here belonged to the monks of two great abbeys, San Clemente a Casauria and Farfa. Of the walls the Portarella remains, a fourteenth-century side entrance, and on the square stands the church of San Marco, damaged by the earthquake of 2016.
Just outside the village is the convent of San Francesco at Colfano, which tradition says was founded by the saint himself beside a spring: that water still runs today in the cellars of the complex. Inside there are two altarpieces, both signed and dated, which for a country church is no small thing. The first is by Nobile da Lucca, of 1490, showing the Madonna enthroned with four saints and the two donors; the second, of 1547, is by Giovanni Andrea de Magistris and follows a Holy Family by Raphael.
