Muccia

Province: Macerata · Region: Marche · Population: 929 · Postal code: 62034

In the Middle Ages it was called Mutia and it was a strategic place for milling and trading grain: the mills were here, and the Da Varano of Camerino built a castle expressly to defend them. The business of transforming what passes through has not gone away: the Varnelli distillery has its plant at Muccia, and above the village, deep in the woods, a hermitage keeps the bones of Blessed Rizzerio, the companion of Saint Francis who was born here.

In the villa La Maddalena, built in the seventeenth century by Cardinal Angelo Giori, the family arms with three bees recur, and a drawing by Gian Lorenzo Bernini is kept there, a portrait of Pope Urban VIII. The church of Santa Maria di Col de Venti, on the other hand, owes its name and its position to a legend: two pilgrims carrying a panel of the Virgin and Child to Rome were forced to stop up there by a wind too strong, and the church was built on the spot. In the village stand the towers of Massa, one round and two square, and at Massaprofoglio the ruin of the castle of Prefoglio.
