Monte Cavallo

Province: Macerata · Region: Marche · Population: 149 · Postal code: 62036

It is the least populous comune in the Marche, and until 1865 it was called Monte San Polo. It does not even have a real centre: the seat of the comune is a place called Piè del Sasso, at the mouth of a gorge closed in by rocky peaks, and the rest is hamlets scattered over the mountain.

Counted up, the churches of this comune are at least eight, roughly one for each piece of the village: at Selvapiana there is a cross in silver plate of the fifteenth century, at Valcadara a fourteenth-century cross and a fifteenth-century fresco of Saint Sebastian, at Cerreto works by De Magistris. In a place where very few people live today, every hamlet wanted its own church — and filled it.
