Pieve Torina

Province: Macerata · Region: Marche · Population: 1,483 · Postal code: 62036

Above a cave where tradition has Peter and Paul stopping stands the hermitage of the Saints, also called Sant'Angelo in Prefoglio. The village takes its name from the Romanesque pieve of Santa Maria, which is of the eleventh century, and in the church of San Giovanni Battista there are a cycle of fourteenth-century frescoes and works by the de Magistris.

On the twenty-sixth and the thirtieth of October 2016, four days apart, two violent shocks brought down almost the whole of the built-up area: the second reached a magnitude of six point five. They are the same two days that ruined Caldarola and half the Macerata hinterland. The village lives by stock farming: pigs, cattle, poultry.
