Feast of Saint Victorinus
📅 Every year, on 8 June
On 8 June Pioraco, a municipality of 1,250 inhabitants in the province of Macerata, celebrates its patron Saint Victorinus; on 14 September the Festa dei cartai (Papermakers' Festival) is held.
The name comes from the Latin Prolaqueum, «by the lake»: the basins that filled the two valleys were still there at the end of the fifteenth century and had wholly vanished by 1660, but the village still carries their name. The water, though, stayed: the Potenza crosses the houses in rapids, and paper has been made here since 1364.
The Da Varano, lords of Camerino, held the monopoly of rags: they rented the townspeople the rooms and tools of the cinciara and gave them the raw material to work. Paper is still made today, in a factory, and the town hall houses the museum of paper and watermarks; on 14 September comes the papermakers' feast. The coat of arms, adopted in 1870, carries a crayfish on a red field.
