Esanatoglia

Province: Macerata · Region: Marche · Population: 2,147 · Postal code: 62024

The name is a nineteenth-century invention: in 1862 the town, which was called Santa Anatolia after the medieval castrum, joined the Roman name Aesa to that of the martyr and became Esanatoglia. On the coat of arms the saint's lily, palm and sword remain, and below there is the sea, which here does not mean the sea: it stands for the Esino, the river that rises above the town.

In the houses of the old village you can still see the three doors: the everyday one, the bride's door and the dead man's door, through which the deceased was carried out. Above, the abbey of Sant'Angelo was the most important monastery in the area and had a famous library: when Francesco Sforza took the town in 1443 with help from Matelica, it did not survive.
