Sefro

Province: Macerata · Region: Marche · Population: 431 · Postal code: 62025

The village lies at the bottom of a narrow valley, closed in by mountains on every side, and the Scarsito stream runs through it making waterfalls inside the built-up area. About the name there is a hypothesis that sounds far-fetched and that a discovery has made less improbable: it would come from Sefer, and Phoenician traders who climbed into the interior looking for iron ore would have brought it here. In 2009, just outside the village, an ancient iron deposit was indeed found.

In January 1240 the papal rector of the March declared Sefro a free comune. Nineteen years later, when Manfred's troops sacked Camerino, it was the people of Camerino who took refuge here: and from Sefro, led by two captains, they went back to retake their city. From that favour came everything else, that is statutes of its own, a privileged relationship with Camerino and a flowering of trades that astonishes today for so small a place: iron, the weaving and fulling of wool, the tanning of hides, quicklime, mills. In the nineteenth century three comuni, Agolla, Sefro and Sorti, became this one.
