Feast of Saint Veronica
📅 Every year, on 9 July
On 9 July Mercatello sul Metauro, a municipality of 1,437 inhabitants in the province of Pesaro e Urbino, celebrates its patroness Saint Veronica.
In 1235 pope Gregory IX proposed gathering into the territory of the pieve the people of the seven castles that stood around it: from then the borgo became a fortified comune and took the name it has, from the markets held there. Free and subject to the popes alone it had been declared already.
In 1361 Branca Brancaleoni bought it for five thousand gold florins, and with the marriage of Federico da Montefeltro to Gentile Brancaleoni, lady of Mercatello, the town went as a dowry to the duke of Urbino; in 1437 it entered the duchy. Saint Veronica Giuliani was born here: her house stands inside the Capuchin nuns' monastery, and has been a sanctuary since 1949.
