Borgo Pace

Province: Pesaro and Urbino · Region: Marche · Population: 643 · Postal code: 61040

Borgo Pace is the village where the Metauro is born: here the Meta and the Auro torrents meet and put together, besides their waters, the name of the longest river in the Marche. It is also the westernmost comune of the region — it became so in 2009, when the comuni of the upper Marecchia valley passed to Emilia-Romagna — and its territory drives a wedge between Tuscany and Umbria, almost all of it mountain.

For centuries the road from Sansepolcro to Urbino passed through here, and at Borgo Pace stood the inn where travellers stopped for supper, a change of horses and the night. Piero della Francesca took that road more than once, on his way to the court of the Montefeltro, and Michel de Montaigne and Joseph Furttenbach both recall it in their travel notebooks. The village was destroyed by the Germans during the war and afterwards rebuilt. In the woods around, a trade almost vanished from the rest of Italy is still practised: that of the charcoal burners, who light their kilns and cook the wood without air; at Le Conce a museum tells the story with black and white photographs.
