Fano

Province: Pesaro and Urbino · Region: Marche · Population: 62,901 · Postal code: 61032

Fanum Fortunae, the temple of Fortune, gave it its name; the Arch of Augustus of 9 AD still serves as its gate and as the symbol locals carry at heart. The via Flaminia ended here, and the Roman city can be read in Augustan walls among the best preserved in the Marche.

Fano's Carnival is documented since 1347 — Italy's oldest — and it flies sweet: floats shower the crowd with the "getto" of sweets and chocolates. The fishing port writes the menu: brodetto fish stew and the moretta, the sailors' thrice-laced coffee, close the day.
