Campomarino

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 7,068 · Postal code: 86042

After 1461 came the Albanians of Skanderbeg, sent to help the Aragonese, and Campomarino was refounded by them: it is one of the four Arbëresh comuni of Molise, and in the hill town arbërisht can still be heard, above all from the older people.

The main street carries the name of George Castriot Skanderbeg and the library that of the painter Ibrahim Kodra. In 1944, at Ramitelli, the Allies had an airfield: from there flew the missions of the Tuskegee Airmen, the African American pilots of the Fifteenth Air Force. Today the 7,068 residents live between the old town, the seafront and the vineyards.
