San Martino in Pensilis

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 4,797 · Postal code: 86046

Legend says that count Robert of Bassavilla, out hunting, found the body of Saint Leo: from that, they say, was born the race of the carts, which San Martino still runs.

The town stands on a hill that falls sheer on two sides, and it is from that position that its second name comes: inside the walls stood the church of Santa Maria in Pensili, and in medieval documents the hill appears as in Pisili, in Pesule, in Pensulis. The in Pensilis of today, mistaken Latin, was added in 1863 to tell it apart from the other San Martinos of the kingdom. The 4,797 residents grow wheat, sunflowers and above all olives.
