Guglionesi

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 5,449 · Postal code: 86034

For centuries the bishops of Termoli lived up here: the town on the coast was under Turkish attack, and Guglionesi was safer. The diocese's first seminary was born here too.

The old town still has its medieval plan, a triangle with three axes and a web of alleys; one of those axes is called via Guiscardo, because in 1060 it was the Normans who took the county of Termoli. In the crypt of the collegiate church rests Saint Adam the abbot: on 2 and 3 June they carry him up to the high altar, with the bells ringing and the band striking up Moses in Egypt. The 5,449 residents grow wheat, olives and sugar beet.

Saint Adam the Abbot and the enthronement from the crypt

📅 Every year, on 2 and 3 June

On 2 and 3 June Guglionesi celebrates Saint Adam the Abbot: the high point of the feast is the enthronement of the saint, brought out of the collegiate church's medieval crypt, his usual place.
