San Giacomo degli Schiavoni

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,410 · Postal code: 86030

In 1902 a Waldensian church was born at San Giacomo: it had been brought by the colporteurs who sold Bibles and by townsmen returning from the United States, where they had met the evangelical faith. The first pastor was the lawyer Pasquale Lo Re.

The congregation reached about a hundred adults, then post-war unemployment took many to northern Italy, to Switzerland, to Germany; dialogue with the Catholic parish began in January 1993. The degli Schiavoni, on the other hand, comes from the Dalmatian Slavs who repopulated the hamlet in the sixteenth century, fleeing the Turks: Molise Croatian was spoken here, and survives today in only three villages. There are 1,410 residents.

Saint James the Greater, patron of a town founded by Dalmatian exiles

📅 Every year, on 9 August

San Giacomo degli Schiavoni celebrates Saint James the Greater on 9 August, also depicted on the municipal coat of arms; once the Casale di San Giacomo, the town was repopulated in the 16th century by a colony of Dalmatian Slavs fleeing Ottoman invasions.
