Termoli's old town is an island disguised as a promontory: within the walls, lanes in yellow and pink descend to the Romanesque cathedral while the Swabian castle stands guard. Below, the trabucchi — fishing machines on stilts — stretch their arms into the Adriatic.
Ferries for the Tremiti, the only islands of the Italian Adriatic, sail from here. A curiosity for clockmakers: the meridian setting Central European Time passes right through Termoli, which styles itself "city of time" for it. The local fish stew, brodetto alla termolese, closes the day properly.
