Feast of Saint Nicholas of Myra
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Macchia Valfortore celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Myra, to whom the town's main church is dedicated.
In 1701 the Prince of Macchia, Gaetano Giacomo Gambacorta, launched from Naples the conspiracy that bears the name of this village of 621 people: an attempt to overthrow the Spanish viceroy, crushed within days. He fled to Vienna and died there in 1703; the family's baronial palace now houses the town hall and a museum.
Below the village the Fortore was dammed and spread out into Lake Occhito, one of the largest artificial basins in Europe, which marks the border with Puglia and is a protected site. The coat of arms shows a tower, a cow and the three old town gates: walls and farming, which is what the place has always been.
