Colletorto

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 2,087 · Postal code: 86044

The tower of Colletorto is cylindrical, twenty-five metres high, and inside it has a shaft they call the trabucco: the bodies of dead soldiers and executed prisoners were thrown down it. Tradition attributes the tower to queen Joanna I, but no document says so.

The town appears as Collis Tortis in 1241, in Frederick II's statute for the repair of castles. Around the tower stands the marquis's palace, rebuilt in the eighteenth century by marquis Bartolomeo Rota: above the arch is the Rota wheel. In the mother church, rebuilt around 1730, the bell tower coincides with the entrance, a rare thing. From up there the 2,087 residents see the Gargano, Lake Lesina and the Tremiti islands.
